Trekking in Nepal




Introduction :
The best way to experience Nepal’s unbeatable combination of natural beauty and cultural riches is to walk through them. The immense contrasts in altitudes and climates found here support an equally spectacular mix of lifestyles, vegetation types and wildlife.
Trekking in the mountains of Nepal is more a cultural experience than a wilderness expedition. You will be passing through picturesque villages inhabited by diverse ethnic groups. You will see Chhetri farmers working in their fields and Tamang herders grazing their animals on the steep slopes. You will meet Gurkha soldiers home on leave and come across Sherpa yak drivers transporting goods over the high mountain passes. And always in the background, the icy pinnacles of the Himalaya loom over the scenery.

We will take care of all the details like government permits, guides, cooks, porters, food, tents, and equipment. All you have to do on the trail is concentrate on putting one foot before the other. A day on the trail usually consists of four to five hours of walking broken by a lunch stop. You trek to enjoy the scenery on the trail, not to get to a destination in a hurry. The main precaution to be taken while trekking is not to go up too high too fast. The body should be given plenty of time to acclimatize. You will find Nepali-ized western food and solar powered hot-water showers in many places. Although broken-English is a norm along these trails, you'll definitely enhance you experience by merging with the culture by carrying a Nepali Phrase book.

Jewels of information:
Littering mars the purity of environment. Avoid the use of non-biodegradable items as mush as possible. Your attempts to burn oddments and carry out the unburnable ones will be a great help in the efforts to conserve the environment.
Carry Lightweight walking boots. "Walk them in" prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters.
Make a check list of trekking items that you need to carry. Ensure Swimming suit ,Water Bottle ,Sunglasses and strap ,Toiletries with large and small towels. Toilet paper can be bought in Kathmandu and some village in the mountains. Small headlamp and/or flashlight/torch with spare batteries ,Personal medical supplies - don't forget band-aids and twizzers ,Army-knife and sewing kit ,Sun-screen, sunblock, sun-tan lotion. We provide the sleeping bags, however you may wish to bring your own..Sleeping bag to -15 C or sleep sheet (if renting or agency supplied)

Day 01 Arrive Kathmandu
Met on arrival and transfer to your hotel.  The evening meal can be taken in the hotel; as an alternative, we will organise a trip to one of the famous restaurants in the old part of the city, Thamel, to celebrate the start of the journey.

MORNING SIGHTSEEING IN KATHMANDU, INCLUDING BHAKTAPUR, AFTERNOON AT LEISURE.  Kathmandu, Asia’s hippy capital, has a wonderful mixture of crowded bazaars, Hindu and Buddhist temples, shrines and stupas, colonial and ancient architecture as well as more modern buildings. This morning we take you on a sightseeing tour, including the old city of Bhaktapur, a few miles to the east of Kathmandu. In the afternoon we suggest you rent a bike or hire a rickshaw to poke around the bazaars and temple complexes to best absorb the myriad impressions assailing your culture-shocked senses! Pre-trek briefing and preparation.

Day 03 Kathmandu - Pokhra
FLY TO POKHARA, DRIVE TO BEGNAS TAL, THE START POINT OF THE TREK, THEN TREK TO KALIKATHAN.  (4,687ft/1,429m).  Today you transfer to the airport for the short mid-morning flight to Pokhara, Nepal’s second city.  This is a spectacular and exciting flight in its own right passing over the Himalayan foothills, with views of the main range to the north. Overlooked by the stunning spire of Macchapuchhare, ‘Fishtail Peak’, the town of Pokhara is the start point for treks to the Annapurna region, Mustang, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu.  You then meet your Sherpa crew and drive for one hour to Begnas Tal, where you begin your trek. The trail leads uphill above the lake, passing through patches of Sal forest and farm villages.  As you gain height, you glimpse the eastern Annapurna range, with splendid views of the lake and Pokhara valley behind you.  The uphill walk starts at 2,900ft/884m and gradually climbs the southern slope of Kalikasthan Ridge.  Kalikasthan (4,687ft/1,429m) is the most spectacular viewpoint in the area, where Prince Charles made his camp in 1982 and indulged in his passion for painting.  Overnight camp. Camp overnight.

Day 04 TREK TO SYAGLUNG.  (4,134ft/1,260m).  We strongly suggest you leave your tents early to enjoy the lovely views of the Annapurna Mountains at dawn.  After breakfast and from the campsite regain the main ridge.  This is a pleasant walk through villages and terraced fields up onto the ‘top’.  There are small Hindu temples here and there.  The village houses are very attractive, painted an ochre colour.  The people are a mixture of Gurung, Chetri and there are also a few Tibetan traders.  Do not be surprised if friendly, enterprising Tibetans visit this campsite.

After the ridge top you descend the other side and for a short stretch join a dusty road.  This ends at a small village on a saddle in the ridge.   The afternoon is a mixture of ridge walking and passing through scattered village settlements; very pretty with plenty of interaction with local people.  There are one or two tiring climbs, but nothing too steep or prolonged.  

From this area the local Gurung tribesmen are recruited for enrolment in the Gurkha forces, serving with both the British and Indian armies.  The area has benefited not only from farming and trading, but also generations of pay and pensions being sent home by the soldiers.  Overnight camp.

Day 05 TREK TO CHISA PANI.  (4,252ft/1,296m). Today is perhaps the best day of the trek.  Again lovely views of the peaks to the north and the villages that you pass through today are particularly pretty.  First you contour around the hillside and drop down through farming communities to contour through jungle.  You pass across two small ravines to reach a collection of houses on a saddle with a huge Banyan tree (3,255ft/992m).

From here it is a long way down a steep hill through forest to another collection of houses at the bottom, Karabutan (2,710ft/826m) about 3 hours walking to this point.  Here you can rest and have soft drinks before climbing steeply up the hill for an hour.  At the top emerge at another village.  The path up from the bottom is a very well made staircase of stone steps.  After the village on the ridge you walk a little way to a lunch spot at a small playing field (3,215ft/980m).  Another hour or so of relatively gentle up and down on the ridge brings you to a camp facing south on old terraces. Set well below a Buddhist temple on a hilltop, around which there is a pleasant circular walk and seats to sit on to contemplate the mountains.
It is possible to invite local people from the village to come to the camp in the evening to perform traditional dancing.  It adds a nice touch to your end of trek party, as tomorrow is your last day’s walking.  Camp overnight.

Day 05 END TREK AT BEGNAS, DRIVE TO POKHARA.  Today it is all the way down to Rupa Tal Lake.  This can be taken slowly and easily down the steep flight of stone steps.  At the bottom the valley floor is flat and is a pretty patchwork of paddy fields and houses.  You then walk a little way round the lake before slowly climbing an intervening ridge, which separates Rupa Tal Lake from the larger Begnas Tal Lake.  It is a short climb to the top of this ridge where you come suddenly to a village.  

Do not be surprised to find the same Tibetan traders waiting for you here (who you saw on day one).  They cunningly know that you will have been thinking about their handicrafts for the last 2 or 3 days!  You now walk a short distance up the road to have lunch on the roof of a small guesthouse before a very pleasant walk down to the Pokhara valley floor to meet your car.  

The little township of Begnas is rather ramshackle, and now there is a lot of activity as the porters finally put down their loads and wave goodbye.  It is then a half-hour drive into the Resort.

Day 06 DRIVE TO PUT-IN POINT, RAFTING ON TRISULI RIVER. You leave Pokhara early in the morning to drive for 3 hours to the put-in point at Mugling, for rafting on the Trisuli River. You will have a full safety brief with a drill prior to lunch, which is eaten on the river bank prior to launching the rafts in the early afternoon.  If the day is hot the crews are likely to have water fights and so we would advise waterproofs!  You will raft for about 2˝ hours, which does not include any serious white water.  Camping by the riverside at night. Those not wishing to raft can drive to the river camp instead and the route provides frequent opportunities to watch the rafts as they move downstream. Overnight riverside camp.

Day 07 MORNING RAFTING, DRIVE TO CHITWAN JUNGLE LODGE.  AFTERNOON GAME VIEWING.  After breakfast you will have another 2˝ hours of rafting till you reach the take out point – usually on a wide sandy beach where you are likely to be served your early lunch.  After this you will transfer to jeeps to reach the Chitwan Jungle Lodge. Once you have settled in, you will have a chance to see some of the wide variety of game that live in this protected area during this afternoon.  Overnight at Chitwan Jungle lodge.

Day 08 and day 09 TWO FULL DAYS GAME VIEWING. Chitwan is home to a rich and varied wildlife. Within its borders can be found wild elephant, the Greater One Horned rhinoceros, leopard, blue bull, sambar, swamp and Chital deer, wild boar and arguably the most magnificent of cats, the Royal Bengal Tiger. You will spend two days going on elephant safari and exploring in open top Jeeps and dugout canoes.

Day 10 FLY TO KATHMANDU.  Today you transfer to the airport for the flight back to Kathmandu and return to your hotel.  

Day 10 Kathmandu
AT LEISURE IN KATHMANDU, OPTIONAL EVEREST FLIGHT.    Today is free to ‘do your own thing,’ with the option of a spectacular flight to get a close-up view of Mount Everest.

Day 11 Leave Kathmandu
In time transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
