TAJ AND BEYOND
DELHI-AGRA-BHARATPUR- RANTHAMBORE- JAIPUR-DELHI
As much as she is known for her culture and civilisation, India is also famous for the range of her natural habitats. Though threatened by population pressure, these continue to provide sanctuary to a wide variety of wildlife – plants, birds and animals.
The vast man-made wetlands that are a major feature of the Keoladeo Ghana National Park attract as many as 375 species of birds every year, many of them migrants from as far away as Siberia and Mongolia. The annual transformation of the park to a cacophonic nursery is an event eagerly awaited by birdwatchers across the globe.
In the shadow of the brooding silhouette of the Ranthambore Fort, lies tiger country and the powerful king of the jungle seems to know this. The lucky may also spot other carnivores such as the caracal, panther and leopard. Certainly the herds of timid deer seem unable to drop their guard.
Combining these with the pinnacles of the ‘golden triangle’ – Delhi, Agra, Jaipur – this itinerary strikes the perfect balance between the man-made and the natural.
Jewels of Information
The wetlands now part of the Keoladeo Ghana National Park were developed as the private hunting preserves of the Maharaja of Bharatpur. The highest number of kills recorded is a phenomenal 4273 birds shot on 12th November, 1938, by the party led by Lord Linlithgow, Viceroy and Governor General of India.
