ALL Tours >> North >> Culture >> Lesser Known Gems of Central India

This is a tour in the heart of India, which is little visited. This tour is for the little more intrepid and repeat visitors to India. The unindustrialized area has thick forests interspersed with ancient forts and palaces. Home to the Narmada river which is one of the largest and most controversial rivers for its dam development programme. Also home to many tribals which remain unaffected by the surrounding industrialized states. Your visits in this tour include Mandu, which is perhaps the highlight with its provincial Islamic style of buildings besides the ancient caves in Bhimbhetka. There are more than 600 rock caves and shelters in the small village of Bhimbhetka with paintings depicting the life of hunters and gatherers of upper paleolithic times.

Jewels of Information
Mandu – the love story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati.
Roopmati was a shepherdess whose singing so impressed Baz Bahadur, the emperor that he decided to capture her. She agreed to go to Mandu with him on one condition that she should live in a place from where she could see her beloved river narmada. He converted a military post as her residence overlooking the river, called Roopmati’s pavilion. A special ghat, “Rewa kund” was made for her to practise her religious rituals.
