  LADHAK

DELHI-LEH-ULETOPKO-LEH-DELHI

Introduction
The extended part of the Gobi desert and Tibetan plateau form the region of Ladhak. At a height of 14,000 feet, the starkness of the land will leave you stunned. As you drive out of Leh, the capital and even from your plane, you see mountains changing colours…purple and red hues contrast with the snow capped peaks. Sparsely inhabited, traditional occupation still remains subsistence agriculture and nomadic herdsmen can be seen with their Yaks, goat and sheep. The predominant religion is Buddhism and there a whole lot of monasteries called Gompas spread across the region. The area is culturally quite close to Tibet. With its slow relaxed pace of life, expect to have a quite getaway. Accommodation in Leh is simple but comfortable and in other areas it is tented (basic).  Built in the 11th century, Alchi monastery is a treasure of the early Buddhist art in the Kashmiri tradition, a style quite different from the Tibetan art.
