Khatling Glacier


Delhi – Rishikesh – Ghuttu – Gangi – kharsali – Bedikharg – Khatling – Ghuttu – Rishikesh – Delhi         (11 Nts/12 Days)

Among the numerous popular treks in Garhwal Himalayas, one from Ghuttu to Kedarnath via Khatling and Mayali pass is for those looking a little more adventure and high altitude trekking. Khatling Glacier is the source of river Bhilangna which merges with Bhagirathi at Tehri. The entire trek can be split into eight days to make it interesting and enjoyable.




















Day 01        Arrive Delhi
Met on arrival and transfer to hotel.
 
Day 02        Delhi
In the morning proceed for a sightseeing tour of the Old Delhi - a multi - layered city. Our first stop is the Red Fort built by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan when he shifted his capital from Agra. A short drive brings us to the Great Mosque - The Jama Masjid. Drive on to see the memorial built for Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Afternoon Sightseeing tour of New Delhi includes a visit to the Qutub Minar - the tallest stone tower in India built in 1191 AD. Chhatarpur Temple - the most popular Hindu temple with blissful tranquility and serene ambience. Continue to Humayun's Tomb believed to have been designed by his widow.  Its plan is based on the description of Islamic paradise gardens and is known to have inspired the Taj Mahal and many later Mughal tombs. Also visit the Bahai Temple - a lotus shaped structure. It is made of marble, cement, dolomite and sand. It is open to all faiths and is an ideal place for meditation and obtaining peace and tranquility.

Day 03        Delhi – Rishikesh
        (Shatabdi Express – 0610 / 1122 hrs)
Morning check-out of the hotel and transfer to the railway station in time to board Shatabdi express for Haridwar. Arrive Haridwar and transfer to Rishikesh. Arrive and check-in at the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. Evening witness ‘Aarti’ of the Holy Ganges at Triveni Ghats a place which is believed to be the confluence of three rivers – Ganga, Yamuna & Sarawati.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 04        Rishikesh - Ghuttu
Check-out of the hotel and drive to Ghuttu. Arrive Ghuttu and check-in at the TRH. Evening at leisure.

Day 05         Ghuttu - Gangi
Morning check-out of the TRH and commence trek. The trail initially cuts through terraced first to deolang village. From there it's an easy 1 ½ hours climb through the forest to Reeh channi village and a steep climb for an hour to Buranschauri. From Buranschuari its a two hour climb to Gangi village at 2585 mts.

Arrive and camp. Overnight at the camp

Day 06         Gangi - Kharsali
Morning pack up and commence trek. The trail drops initially for an hour to Deokhri channi, another winter settlement for the villagers from Gangi. From there its half an hour through the forest to where the trail forks, just beyond the Kalyani stream. The left trail leads to Sahastratal lake 4872 mts. Which the trail to Khatling continues straight an open area known locally as birodh. Legend has it that this place was either the site of the old Gangi village or a meeting place for all the Bhilong villagers. From here it is two hours to Kharsali, which is a large meadow surrounded by giant conifers and oaks, and an ideal camping place. Overnight in camp.

Day 07         Kharsali - Bhedikharg
Morning pack up and commence trek. Cross the bridge over the Kharsali stream and continue further along the forest track to Bhelbagi. Trail follows the river for about two km. Then rises steeply through thick bush passing Bhumkodaar cave to the left of the trail. A further 2 to 3 km. Of climbing brings you to Tamakund cave in an area known for its wild flowers. From there it is just an hour walk to another good camping ground at Bhedikharg.

Day 08         Around Khatling Glacier
Morning trek to the Khatling glacier beyond Bhedikharg and it takes a full day to get to the glacier and back. There are a number of spectacular hanging glacier above the main Glacial floor and good view of the peaks.

Day 09         Bhediklang - Gangi
Retrace steps to Gangi.

Day 10         Gangi - Ghuttu
Retrace steps to Ghuttu.

Day 11        Ghuttu – Rishikesh - Haridwar
        (Shatabdi Express - 1700 / 2245 hrs)
Morning drive to Haridwar in time to board Shatabdi Express for Delhi. Arrive and check-in at the hotel

Day 12         Leave Delhi
Morning check-out of the hotel and transfer to the International airport in time to board flight for onward destination
